KoiCure™ is Aqua Meds' pure oxolinic acid treatment for koi and goldfish. It is typically used when bacterial infections are clearly present and you need something that works more directly on the fish, not just the water.

KoiCure™ is commonly used for ulcers, mouth rot, fin rot, and more advanced bacterial issues, especially when infections are spreading, persistent, or not fully responding to a first-line treatment.

    Directions for Use

    Recent studies suggest that long-term baths at 10 ppm for 6–12 hours can be as effective as short-term baths at 25 ppm for 1 hour, with reduced fish stress (Kawai et al., 1987, Journal of Fish Diseases). Consider this when selecting a treatment method for your koi.

    Dip Method

    • 25 ppm in 50 gallons requires approximately 4.73 grams, rounded to 5 grams for easy measuring.
    • Treat fish for 1 hour in an isolation tank.
    • Ensure adequate aeration and monitor fish for stress.

    Prolonged Bath Treatment

    • Use 5 ppm (19g per 1,000 gallons) of pond water.
    • Maintain treatment for 3 to 5 days, followed by a 25% water change.
    • Recommended for mild infections and recovery enhancement.

    Short-Term Bath

    • Use 10 ppm (38g per 1,000 gallons) of pond water.
    • Maintain treatment for 6–12 hours, depending on severity.
    • Only for severe infections; monitor fish closely for signs of stress.

    Medicated Feed

    • Mix 1g of KoiCure per 1 pound of koi food.
    • Dissolve KoiCure in a small amount of water and coat food evenly.
    • Allow food to air-dry completely before feeding.
    • Feed once daily for 10 days.
  • Medicated Koi Food using KoiCure

    DIY Medicated Koi Food with Aqua Meds KoiCure™

    Purpose:
    To support the treatment of bacterial infections such as Aeromonas, Pseudomonas, fin rot, and ulcers by mixing KoiCure™ into koi food.

    Dosage

    Mix 1 gram of KoiCure™ per 1 pound of koi food. KoiCure™ must be weighed with an accurate gram scale. Do not measure this product with teaspoons or other household measuring utensils.

    Standard Water Method – 1 lb Batch

    Ingredients:

    • Koi pellets: 1 pound, approximately 454 grams
    • KoiCure™: 1 gram
    • Water: A small amount, sufficient to coat the food evenly

    Instructions:

    1. Measure: Weigh 1 gram of KoiCure™ using an accurate gram scale.
    2. Prepare Medication: Mix or disperse the KoiCure™ thoroughly in a small amount of water.
    3. Coat the Food: Place 1 pound of koi pellets in a clean bowl or bag. Add the medicated mixture and mix thoroughly until the pellets are evenly coated.
    4. Dry: Spread the food on a clean tray and allow it to air-dry completely before feeding or storing.
    5. Store: Refrigerate in an airtight container and use within 7–10 days.

    Optional Gelatin Binder Method

    Unflavored gelatin may be used instead of plain water to help the medication adhere to the pellets. Using gelatin does not change the KoiCure™ dosage.

    Additional Ingredients:

    • Unflavored gelatin: Approximately 1 packet
    • Hot water: Approximately 1/4 cup

    Instructions:

    1. Dissolve the gelatin in approximately 1/4 cup of hot water and allow it to cool slightly.
    2. Weigh and mix 1 gram of KoiCure™ thoroughly into the prepared gelatin.
    3. Pour the mixture over 1 pound of koi pellets and mix until evenly coated.
    4. Spread the food on a clean tray and allow it to set and dry.
    5. Refrigerate in an airtight container and use within 7–10 days.

    A small amount of fish oil may also be used as a coating binder. Use only enough to coat the pellets lightly. The KoiCure™ dosage remains 1 gram per pound of food.

    Feeding Directions

    • Feed once daily for 10 consecutive days
    • Feed only what the koi will consume promptly
    • Remove uneaten food
    • Do not feed medicated food unless the koi are actively eating

  • Choosing Between NitroCure™, KoiCure™, and KanaRx™

    Q: How do NitroCure™, KoiCure™, and KanaRx™ differ?
    A: All three are pure Aqua Meds antibiotic treatments, but each is best suited to different situations and treatment methods.

    • NitroCure™ (nitrofurazone) – Primarily a waterborne treatment for external bacterial problems such as ulcers, fin rot, tail rot, mouth rot, and bacterial gill disease. NitroCure™ is especially useful when multiple fish are affected or when treating the pond, quarantine tank, or treatment system makes more sense than treating individual fish. It can be used as a preventative/new-fish quarantine treatment, therapeutic long-term bath, medium bath, or high-dose dip.
    • KoiCure™ (oxolinic acid) – A versatile antibiotic that can be used as an immersion treatment or in medicated food. KoiCure™ is especially useful when bacterial infections are persistent, when redness or ulceration suggests a more established infection, or when the fish are still eating well and medicated food provides a practical way to treat systemically.
    • KanaRx™ (kanamycin sulfate) – A strong broad-spectrum antibiotic used as an immersion or therapeutic bath treatment for serious bacterial infections. KanaRx™ can be a good option when another antibiotic has not produced the desired response or when the suspected bacteria may respond better to kanamycin.

    Do not use NitroCure™, KoiCure™, and KanaRx™ at full strength at the same time. Using multiple antibiotics together does not automatically make treatment more effective and can add unnecessary stress to the fish and biological filtration.

    When possible, choose the antibiotic and treatment method that best fit the symptoms, number of fish affected, severity of the problem, and whether the fish are still eating. If one treatment clearly works, there is usually no reason to change antibiotics simply for the sake of using something different.

    Q: Which one should I use?
    A: As a practical starting point:

    • If several fish have primarily external bacterial problems and you want to treat the water, NitroCure™ is often a good first choice.
    • If the fish are still eating well and you want to treat through medicated food, or if the infection is persistent or more established, KoiCure™ is often the better choice.
    • If you are dealing with a serious bacterial infection or the fish have not responded as expected to another antibiotic, KanaRx™ may be the better treatment.

    For significant ulcers or localized wounds, topical treatment can also be used along with the appropriate antibiotic treatment.
